He watched her.
Stupid, brilliant, irritating girl. She was, once again, in the library past curfew.
The elusiveness of shadows had always been his friend and they were kind to him now. The velvety darkness was almost tangible, covering him like a cloak. Snape quietly stepped behind a nearby bookshelf to peer through the archaic tomes.
He watched her. He had been watching her throughout the year (her last). She had taken on an apprenticeship with Poppy and had helped him through the worst of his injuries so far. At one point, she had grabbed his hand as his nerves threatened to collapse. He would never forget the feeling of that soft, innocent gesture. It had showed him a brief moment of comfort within a universe of pain.
He watched her from the shadows and felt... confused. The Granger girl had started to act as if she truly gave a damn about him. Why should she? No one else had. His jaw clenched as a familiar shroud of loneliness threatened to engulf him.
The affliction wavered as he heard a noise. It sounded, oddly enough, like a sniffle…?
Snape's eyes flashed back to Granger and he nearly started in surprise. She was crying. He stupidly, almost in a panic, looked around but no one else was there (of course). Just the ancient, dusty books and the little echoes of her sorrows.
He felt the familiar darkness of his mind beckon to him. “Flee” it said. Snape inwardly scoffed. Flee? He was a grown man, a professor... a Death Eater. Such people did not flee from weeping schoolgirls. The sight of her did not so much annoy as strangely trouble him. It stirred something deep within that he did not wish to ponder.
Steeling himself, he took a hesitant step forward…
